Despite high anticipation and impressive sales, studies show that Nintendo's exercise game, Wii Fit, may lack staying power. Potentially dampening the hopes of Nintendo and health advocates, a poll conducted in Japan by IT Media found that out of consumers who purchased the game there late last year, only some 22% still use it daily.
The results also found that out of the poll group, 64% have stopped using it altogether, with the remaining people still playing, but not nearly as often as when it was initially released. While Nintendo's sales domination in the console market is unlikely to be threatened by this development, it is probably a disappointment considering the high hopes behind the title.
For game creator and Nintendo icon Shigeru Miyamoto, it can only be further worrying, considering some doubts he expressed for the game in the U.S. market earlier this year. Miyamoto reportedly expressed concerns over the the high divorce rates in the United States and how it might negatively affect families' ability to enjoy the game together.
Considering that 2.3 million copies of Wii Fit have been sold since the game's launch, it would be hard to call it a financial failure, but the results of the IT Media poll don't bode well for it in the long run. In the least, if the results are repeated here in the United States, gamers won't have any problem finding the in-demand game over time.
