Unvealing the news just a short while before the start of the E3 2008, Nintendo announced the upcoming release of the Wii MotionPlus. Designed to enhance the accuracy of the Wii Remote's motion controls, the add-on will plug into the Nunchuck port at the back of the controller. There has been no word yet on whether or not an alternative slot will be available to then utilize the Nunchuck itself, which is vital for a number of games on Nintendo's popular console.
A Nintendo representative went on to say, "The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player's arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion. Every slight movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their game play. The Wii MotionPlus accessory reconfirms Nintendo's commitment to making games intuitive and accessible for everyone."
With rumors of motion controllers for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 constantly surfacing, it seems that Nintendo is poised to keep the Wii at the top of its game. This said, gamers may feel stung that they will have to purchase an add-on for a controller that many feel should have been this accurate to start with. Nintendo will be holding a press conference on July 15 to further address the upgrade.
