Despite the advantage of having been released a year before its competition and having a larger library of quality games, the Xbox 360 continues to lose ground against the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3. June's NPD figures indicate that the Wii, continuing with its consistently astonishing sales rate, has finally overtaken Microsoft's popular console. The Wii has sold 10.9 million consoles in the United States, whereas the Xbox 360 has now sold 10.4 million.
Since its launch, Nintendo's console has been selling at unprecedented rates. Consumers have been buying them faster than Nintendo can make them. In June alone, the Wii sold 666,000 units, beaten only by the Nintendo DS which sold 783,000 systems. Comparatively, the Xbox 360 sold 219,000 units.
Microsoft's console was also beaten again by the PlayStation 3. While the PS3 has been picking up steam in 2008, the June release of the much anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4 helped to bolster sales. The system sold 405,000 units, beating the Xbox 360 by an almost 2:1 rate. The PSP also sold well, moving 337,400 units. And finally, there is the PlayStation 2, which despite its age, managed to move 188,000 consoles.
