Eidos Interactive announced yesterday that they would be partnering with Microsoft to bring exclusive downloadable content to the Xbox 360 version of Tomb Raider: Underworld. The content features two new chapters which will add about six hours of extra gameplay.
The first chapter, appropriately titled "Beneath the Ashes", will become available for download by this Christmas, while the second chapter titled "Laura's Shadow", will release some time next year and will feature a new playable character. There is currently no price set for the DLC.
Sean Vesce, General Manager for developer Crystal Dynamics had this to say:
"We are constantly looking at ways to extend our franchises, whilst developing a deeper relationship with our players. The retail release of any video game is just the start of the player experience, from there it all depends where you want to take the player in terms of ideas and innovation. With these additional chapters and the online reach of Xbox LIVE, we are able to deliver exclusive content to millions of gamers worldwide."
George Peckham, General Manager of Global Third Party Publishing for Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, also stated that:
"We're thrilled that Xbox owners will be able to extend their Lara Croft adventures with exclusive Tomb Raider: Underworld episodes. "We look forward to continue working closely with our great publishing partners to deliver the most robust gaming experiences, only on Xbox 360."
In move similar to the deal with Rockstar/Take Two to produce Xbox 360 exclusive DLC for Grand Theft Auto 4, Microsoft is quickly establishing itself as the superior downloadable content provider. Unlucky enough for PS3 and PC owners, an Eidos spokesperson has stated that there are no plans to release the content for any other platforms.
Tomb Raider: Underworld ships out on November 4 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. A playable demo will also be available on Xbox Live this October.
